Ngā mihinui kia koe. My name is Billy Matheson.

I am a Pākeha New Zealander and consider myself a person of the Treaty. My ancestors came to this beautiful land in the 19th Century. They left homes in England, Ireland, and Scotland and settled in places like Wairau/Malborough, Waitaki/North Otago, Te Matai/Bay of Plenty, and Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland.

I am a designer by training and an educator by profession. As a student I was fortunate to study Contemporary Māori Art and Design with several amazing teachers, and then to work at Te Papa Tongarewa on the wharenui Te Hono Ki Hawaiki with Cliff Whiting which was a life changing experience.

My purpose is to bring people together in ways that support positive change and possiblity. I have spent the last twenty years of my life hosting workshops and retreats, and developing the tools and techniques necessary to create transformational learning environments.

My belief is that human beings have an innate capacity for deep connection and profound creativity, but that most of us need to be in the right context and container before we can unlock these abilities. Social process is my language for these ‘new and ancient’ practices which make insight, connection, and responsibility possible.

I convene regular workshops and retreats, and give talks on social process and social innovation. The Experience Agency (or EXP for short) is the vessel through which I do my work in the world.
